Today I’m doing something a little different with Dolly Parton. Of course, we all know the music, the songs, the awards and the incredible career, but today I want to focus on something much bigger than the music: Dolly Parton’s legacy.

I’m going to take a deeper look at what Dolly has done for Black, Brown and minority communities, the doors she helped open, the causes she supported and the moments when she was willing to stand up for people who didn’t necessarily look like her or come from the same background as her.

We’re also going to talk about Dolly’s impact on women. She entered country music at a time when the industry was overwhelmingly controlled by men, fought to maintain ownership and control of her career, built her own businesses and turned herself into one of the most powerful women in entertainment. She didn’t just become a successful female country artist, she became a songwriter, businesswoman, philanthropist and an example of what it looks like for a woman to maintain control over her work and her identity.

I also want to put Dolly’s career into historical context. What did country music look like when she was coming up? Were Black women making country records? Were Black men already part of country music before Dolly became a star? And how does understanding that history change the way we look at Dolly’s legacy today?

We’ll talk about her philanthropy, including the Imagination Library and the millions of books it has provided to children, her support for education and communities in need, and the way she has consistently used her money, influence and platform beyond simply promoting herself.

And of course, we have to talk about Whitney Houston. Dolly wrote “I Will Always Love You,” but Whitney Houston transformed it into one of the biggest recordings in music history. Their connection became an incredible example of two legendary women from completely different musical worlds becoming permanently connected through one song.

So today, this isn’t really a show about Dolly Parton’s greatest hits. It’s about what Dolly Parton did with the power, money and influence those hits gave her.
