End of Day Report – Tuesday 25 August: ASX 200 sprints ahead - BHP new record - Banks ok - Tech better - EOS soars!

The ASX 200 rose 62 points today to 9,165 as the banks rebounded, with CBA slightly higher and NAB up 0.6%. The Big Bank Basket rose to $266.31 (0.3%). We also saw gains in other financials, with SUN bouncing hard, up 8.0%, and IAG also doing well. MQG had a good day, up 1.7%, and we saw ZIP also doing well, together with AMP. The REITs were slightly mixed, with GMG up but SCG down 2.5% and VCX down 2.7%.

Industrials were better today, with a slight rebound in retail stocks as JBH rose 1.9% and LOV also having a good day, with WOW up 0.8% and COL doing well on the back of its results. Meanwhile, tech stocks bounced, with XRO up 2.6% and WTC adding to recent gains, with others in the tech space rallying too. Healthcare was once again in favour, with CSL pushing up another 2.7% and RMD up 1.7%, although PME dropped 1.5%.

Resources were a little mixed today, although BHP continued to hit record highs, up 0.8%. RIO was also doing well. Gold miners were slightly mixed, with the bullion price pushing a little higher and EVN up 1.0%. Lithium stocks were a little depressed today, with PLS falling hard after a good run yesterday and LTR also falling 8.7%.

Oil and gas stocks eased, with both WDS and STO falling 1.4%. Once again, we have seen increased interest in uranium stocks, with PDN up 2.2% and DYL up 5.6%.

In corporate news today, AZJ rose 1.6% after announcing a $250m buyback. ARB strutted its stuff, up 13.9% on better numbers. COL jumped after net profit rose only 1%. SDR plunged 11.0% on its results, while EOS jumped 23.0% higher on better-than-expected numbers and MND fell 12.0% after its numbers missed expectations. NAN was also in the doghouse as it missed expectations, falling 17.1%.

Asian markets were mixed, with Japan up 0.3%, Hong Kong down 0.3%, China down 0.1%, Kopsi up 0.4%, and US futures were narrowly firmer, with the Dow down 6 points and the Nasdaq up 120. PCE data today. European futures pushing ahead.
