Whitemud Traffic Relief Finally Here | Canada News
Description
Traffic’s finally starting to flow smoother on Whitemud Drive after two and a half years of chaos — the Rainbow Valley Bridge’s eastbound lanes reopened this weekend, marking the end of major bridge construction for Stage Two of Edmonton’s Terwillegar Drive Expansion. What began in February 2024 with westbound lane closures and a full traffic shift has now culminated in three eastbound lanes open and four lanes targeted for each direction by fall. While some westbound lane reductions remain, landscaping and site restoration will continue through 2027. The entire six-kilometer expressway project — a smarter, budget-friendly alternative to a full freeway — kicked off in 2021 and is set to finish by 2028, including new pedestrian bridges, widened roads, and upgraded interchanges.
