The Medical Technology They Tried To Bury | Philip Milburn

Description
Frequency medicine, the Multi-Wave Oscillator, George Lakhovsky, Royal Raymond Rife, Wilhelm Reich, the AMA, and the strange history of unconventional medical research. Philip Milburn returns to Broadcasting Seeds to examine technologies and researchers that challenged accepted ideas about medicine during the twentieth century. Philip traces the history of George Lakhovsky and the Multi-Wave Oscillator, a device built around Lakhovsky's theories concerning electromagnetic frequencies, cellular activity, and disease. We follow Lakhovsky from his early experiments in Europe through his work in Parisian hospitals, his escape from Europe during World War II, and the continuation of his research in the United States. From there, the conversation expands into the controversial histories of Royal Raymond Rife, Wilhelm Reich, Bob Beck, the American Medical Association, the Flexner Report, and other unconventional researchers whose ideas frequently collided with established medical institutions. But there is an important distinction at the center of this conversation: Was a technology scientifically demonstrated to be ineffective—or was research simply abandoned, marginalized, prohibited, or never adequately studied? Those are not necessarily the same thing. Bennett and Philip discuss how institutional resistance can occur through funding, credentialing, publishing, professional associations, lawsuits, regulation, and reputational pressure rather than through a single coordinated conspiracy.

The episode also examines Philip's continuing research into Orgone-related devices and his argument that curious people should investigate historical claims rather than automatically accepting either the alternative-medicine narrative or the institutional narrative.
