SUNDAY - AUGUST 23, 2026 "An Old Hope" Acts 26:1-11

Published 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Description

Paul is chained, accused, and stuck in political limbo, yet he opens his defense by calling the moment “fortunate.” That tension is where we start in Acts 26:1-11, as Paul stands before King Agrippa and Governor Festus and explains the real reason he’s on trial: hope. Not a fresh trend or a private feeling, but the ancient promise God made to Israel, now fulfilled in Jesus Christ.

We walk through how Paul treats opposition as an opportunity to testify, and why simply getting to hear the gospel is a gift we should not take for granted. We also face the uncomfortable honesty of Paul’s past: he once opposed Jesus and persecuted Christians, and he does not hide it. Instead, his story becomes a case study in Christian forgiveness, God’s sovereignty, and how the Lord can redeem what we regret.

Then we trace the bigger storyline behind Paul’s “old hope” from God’s promises to Abraham, Moses, and David to the New Covenant promise of sins forgiven. The hinge point is the resurrection. If God raises the dead, Jesus is not just a moral teacher or a memory, he is alive, reigning, and worthy of trust today. We end with a direct call to respond the way Paul’s message demands: repent, turn to God, and live out repentance with real deeds.
