Episode Details

🚨 South Carolina football just made a HUGE late addition to its 2026 roster.

With only two weeks remaining until kickoff, Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks have added Appalachian State transfer defensive back Ethan Johnson after Johnson was granted an additional year of eligibility through a temporary restraining order.

On today’s Locked On Gamecocks, Chris Marler breaks down what Johnson’s surprising addition means for South Carolina’s secondary and why this could be much more than a simple depth move.

Johnson arrives in Columbia with 47 career games, 39 starts, two All-Sun Belt selections, 141 tackles and 30 passes defended. That experience immediately makes him one of the most intriguing options in a South Carolina cornerback room led by Judge Collier and Vicari Swain.

Could Johnson immediately become South Carolina’s CB3? What does his arrival mean for young defensive backs Kosci Barnes and Damarcus Leach? And could the Gamecocks use more dime packages now that Torrian Gray suddenly has another experienced defensive back at his disposal?

Chris also explains why this move says something bigger about Shane Beamer’s approach to the 2026 season. South Carolina continues to aggressively add veteran talent wherever possible, even with the season opener just two weeks away.

Plus, we dive into the bizarre eligibility situation that allowed Johnson to enter the transfer portal in August, the upcoming Aug. 31 court date and just how crazy the current state of college football roster management has become.
