What do we inherit from our families beyond money, genetics, and a last name?

Guillermo Salazar returns to The Culture Matters Podcast for a conversation about genograms, family systems, culture, identity, and the invisible patterns transmitted from one generation to the next.

Guillermo is the founder of Exaudi Family Business Consulting and has spent more than 25 years advising business families across Latin America, Europe, and the United States. His work focuses on family governance, succession, professionalization, conflict resolution, and the transmission of legacy.

In this episode, we explore Guillermo’s forthcoming book, Genograms for Family Business, and the difference between a traditional family tree and a genogram. Rather than simply showing who belongs to a family, a genogram can help an advisor understand relationships, conflicts, roles, patterns, significant events, and behaviors across generations.

We also discuss how families unconsciously transmit beliefs about money, work, responsibility, relationships, leadership, identity, and success. Some of these patterns may have been useful when they originated but can continue operating generations after the circumstances that created them have disappeared.

Guillermo explains the differences between honor cultures, collective cultures, and individualistic cultures, as well as what happens when families begin crossing and combining these cultural systems.
