A meditation for the Feast of St. Jane Frances de Chantal, from Dom Guéranger’s “The Liturgical Year”, Volume IV of the Time after Pentecost.Saint Jane Frances de Chantal (1572–1641) was a French noblewoman, wife, mother, widow, and religious foundress who became one of the great models of Christian charity and patient suffering. Widowed at the age of twenty-eight, she devoted herself to raising her children and serving the poor, while placing herself under the spiritual direction of Saint Francis de Sales, with whom she formed a profound spiritual friendship. Together they founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary in 1610, intended especially for women who could not endure the austerities of stricter religious orders. As superior of the growing community, Jane Frances endured misunderstanding, bereavement, and many interior trials with extraordinary humility and trust in God. She died in 1641 and was canonized in 1767. Her feast is traditionally celebrated on August 21, and she is particularly remembered for her gentle charity, perseverance amid suffering, and complete abandonment to Divine Providence.Please note that Servant of God Dom Prosper Guéranger went to his eternal reward in 1875; at this point, Volumes I-IX (Advent to Pentecost Saturday) had been completed, but Volumes X-XV (Trinity Sunday to Advent) had not yet been completed. Thus, the remaining readings of the Liturgical Year, from Trinity Sunday until Advent, were not directly authored by Dom Prosper, but were the work of his disciple Dom Lucien Fromage. Dom Prosper Guéranger (1805–1875) was a French Benedictine monk, liturgical scholar, and founder of the Solesmes Abbey, renowned for his pivotal role in reviving the Benedictine Order in France and restoring the Roman liturgy after the disruptions of the French Revolution. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot.
