Description
There's a city under the sea off the Suffolk coast. Dunwich: medieval port, taken by storms, and the story goes its church bells still ring from the seabed before bad weather. Nobody wrote that down for centuries, which bothers historians more than it bothers me. This hour starts down among the bells and takes its time surfacing. Acid folk from 1975 made by people who grew up with the legend, Coil in full sea-magic mode, a stretch of dub techno that works like plainchant, a Weatherall remix that arrives like an instruction, and Arthur Russell twice, once on each side of the waterline. The last record is a dedication, played completely straight, and the bells ring open on the way out: the wedding change, not the funeral one. The two it belongs to will know. Recorded for the Daybreak slot on Voices Radio, London. The track-by-track deep dive, plus everything that wouldn't fit in an hour, lives at maxdupamusic.substack.com. Bells above the waterline.
