Story Transcript:
En: The morning sun cast a pale light over the Kirstenbosch Botaniese Tuin.
En: Winter had covered the earth, but a vague promise of spring hung in the air.
En: Spring plants slowly began to push their heads through the cold ground.
En: The fresh, wet smell filled the garden along with the soft murmur of people.
En: Liesl walked slowly along the pathways, her eyes on the beautiful variety of green around her.
En: She felt the familiar silence in her heart, a mix of peace and loneliness.
En: She longed for plants to give her garden life and perhaps her spirit too.
En: Beside her walked Ruben, her cousin who had just returned from Australia.
En: His eyes moved with wonder over the familiar landscape, grateful for the return to his roots.
En: "Look here, Liesl," said Ruben, pointing to a cluster of bright yellow daffodils.
Af: Agter hulle is Anika, Liesl se lojale vriendin.
En: Behind them was Anika, Liesl's loyal friend.
En: Anika knew the depths of Liesl's silences and always tried to make her a part of the world outside her garden.
Af: "Dis pragtig, Ruben," sê Anika.
En: "It's beautiful, Ruben," said Anika.
Af: "Liesl, dink jy nie hierdie blomme sal jou tuin verhelder nie?"
En: "Liesl, don't you think these flowers would brighten your garden?"
Af: Liesl glimlag flou.
En: Liesl smiled faintly.
Af: "Ja, hulle sal," antwoord sy.
En: "Yes, they would," she answered.
Af: Maar insluitend ander in haar denke oor blomme was moeilik.
En: But including others in her thoughts about flowers was difficult.
En: Inside, she felt alone, even though she was surrounded by people who cared.
En: "If we plant together, we can bring this place to life from the ground up," said Ruben.
Af: "Dalk 'n idee vir 'n tuinklubbottom."
En: "Maybe an idea for a garden club."
Af: Die idee het iets in Liesl geroer.
En: The idea stirred something in Liesl.
En: Her love for plants had always flourished alone, but maybe... maybe she could open up to another.
Af: "Ja," sê sy, haar stem effens skuddend.
En: "Yes," she said, her voice slightly shaking.
Af: "Dit kan werk.
