Two Roads and One Faithful Journey In 1916, Robert Frost published his well-known poem, The Road Not Taken. It begins with a simple, but powerful image: "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood." A traveler stands at a fork in the road, forced to choose between two paths he cannot fully see. Though the moment seems ordinary, it captures something deeply human: the experience of facing decisions without knowing where they will lead. At first glance, the poem seems to celebrate choosing a unique or less traveled path. Yet, Frost quietly complicates this idea by noting that the two roads were actually quite similar. The difference, it seems, is not so much in the paths themselves, but in how the traveler later tells the story of his choice. Looking back, he says his decision "has made all the difference." This tension reflects something true about our own lives. We often stand at crossroads, choosing between opportunities, relationships, or directions in life, and we long for certainty. We want to know which road is right, which decision will lead to success, peace, and purpose. But often, the choice is unclear. Scripture speaks directly to this uncertainty. In Proverbs 3:5–6, we are told, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." This passage does not promise that we will always understand the road ahead. Instead, it calls us to trust God even when the way forward is uncertain. Scripture reminds us that God's presence is not confined to a single "correct" road; it is promised to those who remain faithful to Him. In Joshua 1:9, we are told, "Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." This is not a promise tied to one perfect decision, but to a faithful walk with God. Likewise, Psalm 139:7–10 reminds us, "Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?... even there your hand will guide me." These words assure us there is no road we can take where God cannot reach us. As long as we continue to seek Him and walk in His righteousness, His presence goes with us—guiding, sustaining, and leading us forward, no matter which path we take. This truth frees us from fear. We are not called to make perfect choices with perfect knowledge; we are called to walk forward in faith. God can work through our decisions, shaping our lives in ways we may not immediately see. As Romans 8:28 reminds us, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Frost's poem also invites us to reflect on how we look back on our lives. We often interpret our past choices—sometimes with gratitude, sometimes with regret. Yet, as people of faith, we are invited to see something deeper: that God's love has been at work in every step, even in moments of uncertainty. So, when you find yourself standing at your own crossroads, unsure which road to take, remember this: you do not need perfect clarity to move forward.
