Teen Honored for Life-Saving Actions in Mesa

The City of Mesa and Wisconsin National Guard recognized 16-year-old Laya Jackson during a brief ceremony this morning for her quick thinking and life-saving actions after she witnessed a Wisconsin National Guard soldier collapse while running in Mesa. Jackson saw 1st Sgt. Clint Vervoren collapse on June 27 while he was running during personal leave in Mesa. The teenager, who learned CPR at age 10 on Zoom and practiced it on her stuffed animal, immediately called 911 and began performing CPR, continuing to provide care until emergency responders arrived.
