The Testament of Solomon: Demons, the Ring & the Book That Isn’t in Your Bible

Published 3 days, 10 hours ago
Description
The Testament of Solomon presents a version of King Solomon unlike anything found in the biblical books of Kings or Chronicles. In this ancient pseudepigraphical work, Solomon receives a supernatural ring through the archangel Michael that gives him authority over demons. He interrogates them, discovers the afflictions they claim to cause, learns which angels or names can defeat them, and forces supernatural beings to assist in the construction of the Temple in Jerusalem. This episode examines the strange catalog of entities found in the text—including Ornias, Beelzeboul, Asmodeus, Obizuth, Ephippas, and Abezethibou—along with the book's mixture of Jewish angelology, Greek mythology, astrology, Egyptian religious concepts, and later Christian theology. The story becomes even stranger when demons are connected to the Exodus narrative and one appears to predict the virgin birth and crucifixion of Christ, evidence within the text itself of Christian influence during its transmission. The episode also explores how Solomon's legendary command over spirits helped shape later traditions surrounding the Seal of Solomon, magical grimoires, the Key of Solomon, and the Lesser Key of Solomon.
