Something along those lines

We use this expression when we mean something similar to what has just been mentioned, but not necessarily exactly the same.

Example:

Imagine your friend is moving into a new apartment, and you want to get them a housewarming gift.

Someone asks:

“What are you thinking of getting them?”

You haven’t decided yet, but you have a general idea.

So you say:

“Maybe a nice plant, a candle, or something for the kitchen — something along those lines.”
