Saint Patrick's Day, Dublin, 1929. Captain Arthur has agreed to perform one simple act of kindness: to walk Lady Eleanor's spaniel down to the dog show at the RDS with a green ribbon on his collar. Pip objects — not to patriotism, but to ornament.
Before luncheon, the simple act of kindness has cost rather more than expected. A professional reputation compromised. A titled lady offended. And a breeder up from Berkshire calmly explaining that Pip is not Pip at all: he is a stolen champion named Blenheim Caesar, and she has the papers to prove it.
She does have papers. That is the difficulty. A registration certificate. A veterinary description of his markings. A photograph dated 1926. And every single one of them is very slightly wrong: a certificate describing marks that were only learned last Tuesday, and a year written on a photograph mount that the photograph cannot possibly belong to.
To keep a dog who has never been anywhere near Berkshire, Arthur and Anne must prove that a perfectly documented claim is a perfectly documented lie.
