K-9 Detects Hidden Electronics for Child Safety | Seattle News
Description
Thurston County just welcomed a groundbreaking K-9 detective — one of only three in the region — specially trained to sniff out hidden electronics used in crimes against children. This young black lab can locate USB drives and other devices by detecting their chemical signatures, scanning entire rooms in minutes and drastically speeding up investigations. Funded by Defenders for Children, the program also uses the dogs to de-escalate tense searches and comfort victims. The dog will work alongside a detective, with training underway before deployment. With only similar units in Portland and Seattle, Thurston County expects to lend a paw to neighboring jurisdictions when needed — and the dog is now officially part of the Sheriff’s Office.
