Nearly 30 years after Tupac Shakur was gunned down on the Las Vegas Strip, the first person ever charged in his murder finally faced a jury.
On the opening day of the trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, prosecutors painted a clear picture of revenge. They told jurors that Davis, a former South Side Compton Crips leader, did not pull the trigger—but orchestrated the entire drive-by that killed the 25-year-old rap icon on September 7, 1996. Just hours after Tupac and members of his Death Row entourage beat Davis’s nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, in the lobby of the MGM Grand following a Mike Tyson fight, prosecutors say Davis got a .40-caliber Glock, assembled a crew in a white Cadillac, and made sure the shooters were armed and ready.
Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal told the jury the state’s case rests heavily on Davis’s own words—from a secret 2008 interview with investigators, later statements, and his 2019 memoir Compton Street Legend—in which he described being in the front passenger seat, passing the gun to the back, and watching the shots ring out. “Duane Davis did not pull the trigger. But he did plan the shooting in retaliation for the beating of his nephew,” Palal said. “And remarkably, you will learn that from Duane Davis himself.”
Defense attorney Michael Sanft hit back hard, calling his own client “full of crap” and telling jurors Davis’s long history of self-incriminating stories was just that—stories told for attention and money. “There’s no facts,” Sanft argued. The first witnesses took the stand, including a former Las Vegas Metro officer who rode in the ambulance with a still-conscious Tupac and heard the rapper refuse to name his attackers, saying something to the effect of “we’ll take care of it.” Thirty years of silence, street codes, and unanswered questions collided in a Las Vegas courtroom.
