That's the bottom line

The bottom line is the most important fact, conclusion, or result in a situation.

Example:

Imagine you’re deciding between two apartments.

The first one is beautiful.

It has huge windows, a gorgeous kitchen, and much more space.

You love it.

There’s just one problem.

It’s far beyond what you can comfortably afford.

Your friend listens as you list all the reasons you love it and eventually says:

“I know it’s beautiful, but you can’t afford the rent comfortably. That’s the bottom line.”

You might love the windows.

You might love the neighbourhood.

You might already be imagining where your sofa would go.

But none of those details changes the most important fact.

That’s the bottom line.
