Elle Chrisp: impacted mother on taking Kmart to Disputes Tribunal over asbestos-contaminated sand
Description
Kmart has been ordered to compensate Christchurch couple whose toddlers played with asbestos-contaminated sand.
The retailer was part of a nationwide recall of coloured play sand products, after they tested positive for tremolite, a form of asbestos associated with cancer risk.
The Disputes Tribunal ordered Kmart to pay the family $15,185.42 to cover costs associated with asbestos testing and remediation.
Impacted mother Elle Chrisp says Kmart decontaminated their stores - but the people who purchased the sand were just told to dispose of it.
"I thought, that's crazy that you would close the store, decontaminate it - but yet, it's been in my home, in my children's hands, and I'm just told to chuck it in the bin? So we had it tested.
