The Trump administration has issued directives to align the U.S. Childhood Vaccination schedule with certain peer nations by reducing universal targets to 11 core diseases and proposing individual shots rather than combination vaccines. Despite federal executive orders and administrative actions seeking to reduce the number of routinely recommended childhood vaccines from 17 to 11 and split combination shots like the MMR vaccine, federal court rulings and the American Academy of Pediatrics mean that prior universal standards remain legally active and recommended. Kate Asher, the author of The Book of Heaven: A Story of Hope for the Outcasts, the Broken, and Those Who Lost Faith, joins me to discuss the issue and the fight.
Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and nuclear-armed Pakistan have signed the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement, declaring that an armed attack against one member will be treated as an attack against all three. Turkey's foreign minister says the agreement is "technically the same" as NATO's Article 5 collective-defense provision. The pact brings together a NATO member, a nuclear power, and one of America's most important Middle Eastern partners. Its leaders insist the alliance is defensive and does not threaten the United States, Israel, Iran, or the Abraham Accords.
But the unanswered questions are enormous. Jared Knott, historian and author of Tiny Blunders/Big Disasters Books, joins me to discuss what is really happening as these nations come together.
