ESPN says the Chicago Bulls may not seriously contend until 2032 — but is that timeline fair, or way too pessimistic?

On today’s Chicago Bulls Central, Haize breaks down ESPN placing the Bulls in its “Maybe by 2032” tier, a group built around teams that may have promising young talent but still look years away from true championship contention. The logic is understandable: Chicago is coming off a 31-win season, finished near the bottom of the league offensively and defensively, and still has a new front office, new coach and unproven young core.

But Haize pushes back on the idea that Chicago automatically needs most of the decade before it can matter again. If Caleb Wilson becomes a true franchise player, the rebuild changes immediately. If Matas Buzelis makes a Year 3 leap into borderline All-Star territory, the Bulls may already have two major pieces. And if Josh Giddey settles in as an elite connector rather than trying to be the superstar, Chicago’s timeline could move up fast.

Haize also looks at why ESPN has a point: the Bulls do not yet have a proven No. 1 option, lack meaningful playoff experience, still have major defensive questions, and are rebuilding in a crowded Eastern Conference. But in today’s NBA, six years is an eternity — and if Wilson, Buzelis, Giddey, Nic Claxton, Tiago Splitter and Bryson Graham hit the right developmental checkpoints, Chicago could enter serious contention conversations closer to 2029 or 2030 than 2032.
