It goes both ways

We use “it goes both ways” when something should be mutual or reciprocal.

In other words, if one person gives something — effort, respect, support, honesty — the other person should usually give something too.

It shouldn’t all come from one side.

Example:

Imagine you share an apartment with someone.

You usually wash the dishes, take out the rubbish, and clean the kitchen.

One day, your roommate complains:

“You left your cup on the table.”

You laugh and say:

“Fair enough, but keeping the apartment clean goes both ways.”
