Greg McElroy, Joel Klatt and Roman Harper all put a ceiling on Pete Golding's first Ole Miss team this month. Then Golding walked to a podium with a top-ten roster and was harder on his own team than any of them were.

McElroy, ranking Ole Miss No. 11: "I don't know if an 11-1 or a 10-2 is likely. 9-3 feels more realistic with some of the teams they're having to face." Klatt, ranking them No. 16: "with replacing Kiffin and the tough schedule, Ole Miss is at the bottom of this tier." Roman Harper, to Chase Daniel: "They're not winning the (National Championship). They're Ole Miss. You'll learn, you'll come around."

Take Two: Golding's own words this week — "We still need more urgency. We still need more attention to detail. Experience doesn't fix that," and "We're definitely not where we need to be. We have a lot of work to do." He reached back to 2023: "guys were taking pictures of new stadiums. It was like 'what are we doing?'"

The honest counterweight runs both directions. Golding has never coached a full season as a head coach — that's a real unknown, and the schedule is exactly as hard as the doubters say. And podium self-criticism in week two of camp is the most common sentence in the sport. Nothing ends this except wins.
