Russians Wanted the War—Until Ukraine Brought It Home
Description
In this video, I look at something potentially important happening inside Russia: not simply battlefield losses, but a change in the way Russians themselves are talking about the war.
Residents of Novorossiysk describe an unprecedented night of attacks and fear. One Russian woman openly asks what the point of the war is and says people are reaching the breaking point. Nobel Peace Prize winner Dmitry Muratov says the constituency that strongly favors continuing the war has shrunk dramatically and that many Russians now simply want a ceasefire. Then Russian military commentator Maxim Kalashnikov goes much further—questioning Russia’s strikes on Ukrainian civilian targets, calling the “special military operation” a war, describing it as a fiasco, and warning that Russia itself could face a severe systemic crisis.
And then there is Dmitry Medvedev, insisting that Russians who oppose the war simply have “problems with their brains.” The contrast is striking. The Kremlin is still selling the old message while more Russians—including some traditionally patriotic voices—are beginning to ask a very different question: what exactly has this war accomplished?
