For lack of a better word

We use this expression when the word we choose is not exactly right, but it is the closest or best word we can think of at that moment.

Example:

Imagine you have been living in another country for several years.

One day, you return to the neighbourhood where you grew up.

The streets are familiar.

The bakery is still there.

You recognise the park.

You know where everything is.

And yet…

something feels different.

Maybe the place has changed.

Maybe you have changed.

Someone asks:

“How did it feel to be back?”

You think for a moment and say:

“It was, for lack of a better word, bittersweet.”

You are happy to be there.

But there is also a strange sadness.

It feels familiar and unfamiliar at the same time.
