Gemini hits one billion - Google says Gemini has reached 1 billion monthly active users, a major consumer AI milestone. The number shows Google's distribution strength, but also raises questions about retention, model competitiveness, and AI market durability.

AI buildout meets financial risk - New developments in AI infrastructure point to bigger bets and bigger financial exposure. Elon Musk's Texas Terafab plans, Google's funding posture, and Nvidia-backed financing all signal that AI is now as much a capital markets story as a technology story.

AI tools become active developers - AI coding is moving beyond suggestions into real execution inside developer workflows. From automated repo repair to AI-assisted PCB design, the trend is toward agents that can change code, test it, and iterate with less human handling.

AI changes cyber defense - Security teams are being told not to wait for the next model generation. Vercel argues today's AI systems are already capable enough to find vulnerabilities, explore attack surfaces, and help defenders harden software faster.

Private Indian rocket reaches orbit - Skyroot's Vikram-1 became the first privately built Indian rocket to reach orbit, marking a turning point for commercial space in India. The launch highlights both the sector's promise and the need for stronger legal and regulatory foundations.

Hydrogen record highlights heavy industry - JCB says it has set a world land speed record for a hydrogen-powered vehicle, giving hydrogen combustion a high-profile moment. The significance is less about speed itself and more about decarbonizing heavy machinery and other hard-to-electrify sectors.

Gemini hits one billion
We'll start with consumer AI, where Google says Gemini has reached 1 billion monthly active users. That count refers to people using the Gemini app or web interface directly, not the much larger group that encounters Gemini features sprinkled across Google's other products. Even with that narrower definition, it's a striking number and a reminder that distribution matters just as much as model quality in this market. Google also says more than 100 million of those users are on iPhone, which shows Gemini is not simply riding Android defaults. The catch is that scale does not automatically mean long-term dominance. Questions remain around release pace, talent retention, and how well Gemini stacks up against top rivals in areas like coding.

AI buildout meets financial risk
Staying with AI, the buildout behind all of this is getting bigger, and more financially complicated. In a new development on the Texas factory story we've been following, Elon Musk's planned Terafab project is now being described as a site of more than 100 million square feet, with an estimated cost of nearly 17 bil
