Back to EpisodesSpaceX Crashed From $224—Jay Hatfield Says Valuation Matters
Description
SpaceX went from roughly $224 to around $131 in just two months. So after a collapse that dramatic, is the stock becoming an opportunity—or is it still too expensive? On this short clip from Hatfield Economics, host Todd M. Schoenberger puts that question to Jay Hatfield, CEO of Infrastructure Capital Management and CIO of the ICAP ETFs, including the newly launched QVOL. Hatfield's answer comes down to one principle: “Valuation matters.” Hatfield explains how his team built a discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis for SpaceX and arrived at a valuation of approximately $100 per share. Unlike highly speculative businesses whose future profitability can be extremely difficult to forecast, Hatfield argues SpaceX has real revenue, profitable space-launch operations, a powerful satellite business and other proprietary operations that provide investors with something tangible to value. That doesn't mean he would chase it. Hatfield says investors didn't want to own SpaceX around $200 based on his team's valuation work, but argues that when the stock approaches $100, the risk/reward becomes considerably more interesting. If it subsequently explodes toward $140 in a matter of days, he says investors should consider taking profits. His conclusion: SpaceX may currently be better viewed as a high-volatility trading vehicle than a traditional buy-and-forget investment. Hatfield also explains why investors analyzing companies whose profitability sits several years into the future need to do the valuation work—and be prepared for enormous price swings along the way. $224. $131. Maybe $100.
