Raised in a household steeped in speech-communication research — a background that informs his rhythmically unique, speech-like phrasing — Goldberg honed his technique under clarinet master Rosario Mazzeo and studied with Joe Henderson and Steve Lacy.In the 1980s Goldberg’s New Klezmer Trio (with drummer Kenny Wollesen), injected the raw, spatial energy of avant-garde jazz into traditional structures, leading to collaborations with artists including Andrew Hill, Nels Cline, Bobby Bradford, and John Zorn. This musical heritage is fully realized across the "8 x 8" collection, capturing the sheer velocity of his current creative circles.
