🥚 A Mississippi State Podcaster Just Picked Against Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl

Episode 2933 Published 3 days, 19 hours ago
Description

I put my Ole Miss season prediction on the record with a Mississippi State host sitting across from me. 9-3 — and still a Playoff team.

Steven Willis is joined by Jaron Spor of Locked On Mississippi State for the fall camp Egg Bowl crossover: season predictions, the LSU question, whether this rivalry is finally about to get competitive again, and the stat nobody uses about last year's close wins.

IN THIS EPISODE:

🎯 9-3, and where the losses are. Steven's call: at Texas, at Oklahoma, and a letdown at Florida — and why this schedule is brutal enough that 9-3 still gets Ole Miss into the Playoff. Louisville is the sneaky game nobody's discussing because LSU takes all the oxygen. And the Swamp is the hinge: win it and you talk national title legitimately, lose it and you're fighting to get in.

🗣️ A rival host on Chambliss. Jaron says flatly that Trinidad Chambliss is the best quarterback in college football — and that he had him there last season, over Fernando Mendoza. He also thinks LSU could start 1-3, and he's not backing off his Sam Leavitt skepticism.

🥚 Is the Egg Bowl coming back — and does Mississippi State win it? Jaron gives a 23-20 Bulldogs pick, but with a specific condition attached: if Ole Miss arrives at 9-2 needing the win to reach the Playoff, he thinks Ole Miss takes it. It's the 10-1-and-already-in scenario, or the 8-3-and-already-out scenario, where he thinks the Bulldogs shock them. Plus Kamario Taylor's dual-threat ability, Zach Arnett's return as defensive coordinator, Mississippi State's inability to generate negative plays under Jeff Lebby, Steven's argument for wanting the Bulldogs to climb, and the 1982 Egg Bowl and the immaculate deflection.

📊 The stat nobody uses. Ole Miss won a lot of one-score games last year. Ole Miss was also up two scores in the fourth quarter in every one of them. Plus a defense that finally got spent on: Joenel Aguero, Edwin Joseph, Sharif Denson, Jay Crawford — all Power 4 starters.

And Jaron's honest counterpoint: he isn't sold on Pete Golding yet.
