Hank Hill and Stoicism: The Ethics of Propane

Hank Hill and Stoicism: The Ethics of Propane

Published 2 days, 3 hours ago
Description

What Hank Hill gets right—and wrong—about Stoicism is more useful than it has any business being.

This BWAAA! episode follows Hank’s practical ethics, his emotional blind spots, and why Dale, Peggy, Bobby, and Bill keep putting the philosophy to the test.

Hank Hill would hate the phrase “Stoic virtue.” He would also, somehow, live a lot of it: show up, do the work, do not make life harder for the people around you, and do not let panic make the decisions.

But Stoicism is not emotional shutdown, and that is where *King of the Hill* gets interesting. We look at Hank’s difference between calm and bottled-up, Bobby as the person Hank cannot control, Dale as a stress test for ordinary reality, Peggy’s hunger for applause, and Bill as the inconvenient duty of friendship.

This is a video essay and fan commentary on *King of the Hill*—not a replacement for the show. If Hank’s version of practical wisdom has helped you, or if you think he is mostly just avoiding a feeling with a socket wrench, tell us below.
