Starting as an English teacher in Nashville, she later led the Child Development Center in Wilmington for 18 years, transforming it into a thriving hub for families. Even after retiring in 1994, she remained active on the board. A gifted musician who played piano and accordion alongside her late husband Fletcher, she also volunteered tirelessly through PEO and her church. Survived by daughter Kathryn, son David, and five grandchildren, Janis’s family honors her memory by supporting education — donations to the UNCW scholarship fund continue her mission.
