Republican Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana cast the decisive vote, effectively saving the nomination after fellow GOP Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins joined all Democrats in opposing Blanche. Because Senator Mitch McConnell was absent, Cassidy's support was required to prevent the nomination from collapsing.
