AI-designed viruses raise alarms
We’ll start with AI and biosecurity. U.S. researchers say they used AI to design entirely new viruses, then built those genomes in the lab and showed that they could replicate. These were bacteriophages, so they target bacteria, not people, and the medical upside is real because this could speed up work on treatments for antibiotic-resistant infections. But the bigger takeaway is hard to ignore: AI is moving from generating text and images to generating workable biology, and that puts much more pressure on safety rules.
SpaceX bets big on AI
AI safety is also under scrutiny for a different reason. A fresh report pull

Today's topics:
AI-designed viruses raise alarms - Researchers used AI to design new bacteriophages that were built and shown to replicate, accelerating synthetic biology while intensifying biosafety and biosecurity concerns.
SpaceX bets big on AI - SpaceX reportedly plans a huge Nvidia Vera Rubin rollout and is expanding its role as an AI infrastructure provider, while Tesla and SpaceX confirmed a massive Texas chip fab plan.
The new AI pricing war - Meta is discounting AI coding access in exchange for user data, OpenAI is removing text chat limits for ChatGPT users, and open-weight models keep pressuring closed AI providers on cost.
Agents move onto the web - Cloudflare is pushing an 'Agentic Internet' with new standards and an agent-focused browser, while broader tooling aims to make AI agents work inside websites and chat platforms more cleanly.
Meta faces child safety ruling - A New Mexico court ordered Meta to fund treatment and prevention efforts tied to alleged mental health harms from Facebook and Instagram, adding more legal pressure over child safety.
Biotech advances beyond COVID era - The FDA approved an mRNA flu vaccine for older adults, UK researchers tested a fridge-free vaccine, and Rice University reported a promising way to protect transplanted diabetes cells.
Nuclear and supersonic momentum - Oklo reached reactor criticality in Texas, and U.S. regulators are reconsidering overland supersonic rules, two signs that long-delayed energy and aviation bets are moving again.
GitHub outage hits developers - A major GitHub Actions outage disrupted builds, releases, and webhooks for hours, underscoring how much modern software delivery depends on a few central cloud development platforms.
Quantum clue from a magnetar - Astronomers may have captured the first evidence of vacuum birefringence near a magnetar, offering a rare real-world test of quantum electrodynamics in extreme conditions.
