In the aftermath of Angkor's fall, a small group of Kuoy people in the Cambodian highlands carried on an ancient tradition: smelting iron the way their ancestors did for a thousand years. This episode looks at the iron harvest — the seasonal collection of laterite ore from the Phnom Dek range — and how it fed the Khmer Empire's endless demand for weapons, tools, and temple hardware. We examine the technical process of bloomery smelting, the role of the Kuoy as specialist ironworkers, and the social and economic systems that tied the forest communities to the Angkorian center. New research from the Phnom Dek Archaeological Project suggests that this "peripheral" industry may have been far more integrated into the empire's power structure than previously thought.
