Courage for Fresh Starts
Description
The night before a fresh start she had prayed for, she lay awake feeling sick to her stomach. The mind running through every worst-case scenario. What if I am not enough for this. What if I fail in front of people. What if saying yes was a mistake. She wanted to feel brave. What she actually felt was small and unsure, wondering if everyone else walks into new seasons with more confidence than she ever seems to manage.
If you have felt that way, it does not mean something is wrong with you. It means you are human, standing at the edge of something that matters enough to make your hands unsteady.
Fresh starts sound hopeful from a distance. Up close, they often just feel like fear wearing a new outfit. A first day at the job you prayed for and now feel unqualified to do. A move to a city where you do not know a single name. A new season of motherhood, singleness, ministry, or recovery. Something that asks you to walk forward without a map.
Moses spoke the words of Deuteronomy 31:6 to people who understood that feeling. The Israelites were stepping into a land they had never lived in, facing challenges they had never faced, and doing it without the leader who had guided them for forty years. They had every reason to feel unprepared. And Moses did not tell them to wait until the fear passed. He told them to be strong and courageous, not because the unknown had gotten smaller, but because God was going into it with them.
That is the piece worth returning to every time the knot forms in the stomach before something new. Courage in this verse is not a reserve of confidence we have to generate before we are allowed to move forward. It is tied directly to a promise: He will not leave you or forsake you. We are not being asked to walk into the unfamiliar alone and hope for the best. We are being asked to walk into it with Someone who already knows the way.
You do not need to have this new season figured out. You do not need to feel brave before you begin. You only need to know you are not entering it alone.
Ponder Tonight
Fresh starts rarely feel sacred in the moment. They feel logistical, uncertain, and a little exposed. But every first day is also an invitation to trust God with what we cannot yet see and to let His presence be the steady thing when nothing else is.
The courage Moses called the Israelites to was never meant to be self-generated. It was courage rooted entirely in the character and the presence of the God going before them. The same is true for every unfamiliar step we face.
Naming the honest, specific fear underneath a fresh start, not the polished version but the real one, is one of the most important things we can do before stepping forward. God already knows it. Bringing it into the open with Him loosens its grip.
Looking back at a previous season where we felt unready but moved forward anyway, and seeing how God showed up there, is one of the most faith-building exercises available to us. That evidence does not expire.
Tonight's Scripture
"Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you." — Deuteronomy 31:6, ESV
Your Evening Prayer
Lord,
Tonight we lay down the worry we have been carrying about what is ahead. You already know every fear we could not quite say out loud today, the doubts about whether we are ready, the questions about whether we will fail, the ache of stepping into something unfamiliar.
Thank You that our courage was never meant to come from having it all figured out, but from knowing You go before us and beside us. Quiet the racing thoughts as we close our eye
