Colossians 3:12 opens with a reality that should stop us in our tracks every time we read it. As God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved. Not chosen because of what we achieved or how well we have performed, but chosen by the God of the universe, made holy through His Son, and held in a love that did not waver even when we gave Him every reason to look elsewhere.

Let that sit quietly for a moment before moving on to everything else the verse asks of us.

Because it does ask something of us. Therefore, clothe yourselves. The image is deliberate and practical. Every morning, we make choices about what to put on. And the same intentionality we bring to our physical wardrobe is being invited into our spiritual one. The old garments, the anger, the sharp reactions, the defensive habits, the frustration that spills out before wisdom can catch it, these are things to actively take off. And in their place, the new uniform: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience.

Notice that the old garments are almost entirely tied to words and reactions, the unfiltered expressions of raw emotion in the moments when we are caught off guard, stretched thin, or stepping into something unfamiliar. A new job. A shifting marriage. A changing family dynamic. New seasons are precisely the moments when the old reactions surface most forcefully, because discomfort has a way of revealing what is still underneath.

But we are not left to manage this transformation on our own. The God who chose us is also the One shaping us, measuring and tailoring these new responses into our hearts through His Spirit.

Tonight, take off the garments of hurry and worry and defensiveness. Ask Him to do what only He can do. And step into tomorrow's season clothed in something new.

Ponder Tonight

Being chosen by God is not a background theological fact. It is a present, living reality that should shape how we see ourselves and how we move through every new season and every difficult moment within it.

The old garments Colossians names are almost entirely relational and verbal, which means spiritual maturity shows up most clearly not in private devotion but in how we respond to people when we are under pressure.

New seasons are particularly revealing because discomfort and unfamiliarity bring old patterns to the surface. They are also particularly well-suited for transformation, because we are already in a posture of adjustment and change.

Choosing a soft answer over a sharp one, extending forgiveness rather than holding a grudge, practicing patience in the relationship that most tests it, these are not small or incidental acts. They are evidence of who we are from the inside out, and of whose we are.

Your Evening Prayer

Lord God,

May we never lose the wonder of being chosen by You. Thank You that through the giving of Your Son's life, we are made holy. Thank You for Your amazing love for us, love that did not wait for us to deserve it and does not depend on us maintaining it.

As we step into this new season, fill us with the attributes that show we are Your children. Compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. May the way we show up for the people around us be evidence of who You are and who we are from the inside out.

Tonight we take off the garments of hurry, worry, anger, and the urge to react in frustration. Wash away the sharp words and defensive habits. Renew us with Your Spirit. Refresh our souls.
