The annual horticultural exhibition is under way in the grounds of the great house, the marquee smells of cut grass and rivalry, and a Major's prize roses have quite obviously been bought rather than grown. Then an elderly lady who has waited thirty-four years for an answer accuses somebody of cheating, takes a paper cup of plain water, says two words — "He knew" — and is dead before the speeches are finished. The village would very much prefer this to be a weak heart. But a sharp-eyed old spinster among the flower tables has noticed the paper cup, and she does not believe in convenient hearts. Between a wartime supply ledger, a photograph with five people in it and a name nobody will say aloud, a convalescent home that was once a tenant farm, a twenty-one-year-old nurse's assistant who disappeared in 1917, and a girl who never left her father's land, the truth turns out to be less about roses than about the particular kind of silence respectable men mistake for decency. A Murder at the Flower Show is an original Golden Age-style mystery about village vanity, long memory, and an old woman who was never as harmless as she looked.
