Chatsworth House's historic Great Parterre garden, created by the first Duke of Devonshire in 1699 and covered over after just 30 years, has re-emerged as a 'ghost garden' during Britain's exceptionally hot and dry summer. The drought has caused grass to die at different rates, revealing the intricate swirling pathways and flowerbed patterns beneath the lawn where shallower root systems exist over the original garden structures. Similar drought conditions have also exposed First World War practice trenches in North Wales and previously undiscovered Iron Age farmsteads across Britain.
