Description
Text us to let us know what you want to hear on the podcast!
Some of the worst advice we receive is not malicious. It comes from people trying to protect us through the limits of their own experiences, fears, regrets, and worldview.
In this episode of Reality Check, Jess and Jill unpack the awful advice they were given about careers, entrepreneurship, motherhood, fitness, money, stability, and success. From being told not to leave a secure job, to being warned that motherhood would make staying healthy impossible, to hearing that pursuing fitness or building an unconventional life was unrealistic, they break down why advice is often more autobiographical than objective.
They also explore the difference between guidance that expands your thinking and advice rooted in fear, scarcity, judgment, or comparison. Not every person who doubts your vision is trying to hold you back, but that does not mean their version of safety should become your blueprint.
This conversation is about learning how to evaluate advice, trust your own vision, define success for yourself, and recognize when someone else is projecting their limitations onto your life.
Jess and Jill also turn the lens inward and ask a harder question: Are you offering people wisdom, or are you judging their choices because their vision looks different from yours?
In this episode:
• Why people give advice based on their own fears and experiences
• The worst career, business, motherhood, and life advice Jess and Jill received
• How limiting beliefs get passed down as practical guidance
• Why leaving stability can be the right decision
• The difference between fear-based advice and aligned feedback
• How scarcity mindset affects judgment and comparison
• Why fulfilled people tend to give different advice
• How to decide whose opinion deserves influence
• Why someone else’s definition of success may not fit your life
• How to trust your vision without rejecting all feedback
Before taking someone’s advice, ask whether they have built the kind of life you actually want. Before giving advice, ask whether you are speaking from wisdom or from your own unresolved fear.
Because the people who love us can still hand us a smaller version of our lives. Your job is to decide whether their advice expands your possibilities or quietly shrinks them.
