Episode Details

Work has been recast in our culture as something to escape, endure, or minimize. But if you read Scripture from beginning to end, you find exactly the opposite. God himself is described as working. Adam and Eve were placed in the garden to work it. Moses was shepherding his flocks when he saw the burning bush. Gideon was threshing wheat. David was watching sheep. Matthew was collecting taxes. James, John, and Peter were fishing. Even Saul, who would become Paul, was vigorously pursuing his mission on the road to Damascus when everything changed.
The pattern is consistent across every person God called to do something significant in Scripture: they were all working when it happened. Not resting, not waiting for clarity, not praying for direction before taking any steps. They were already in the middle of something. God doesn't seem to be in the habit of calling people off couches. He calls people who are already engaged — and work is the environment in which he molds them.
Paul reminds believers in Ephesus of something foundational: you are the handiwork of God, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which he prepared in advance for you. That's not a sentiment. It's an identity claim. You were not put here simply to take from the world, but to contribute something to it. Something specifically yours.

1. Do you think of yourself as the "handiwork of God, created to do good works"? Does that description feel real to you — or does it feel like something you'd say but don't quite believe?
2. The biblical pattern shows everyone God called was already working. How does that challenge the way you think about waiting for God's direction versus stepping out?
3. What does "work as the environment where God molds you" mean in your specific situation right now? What might he be trying to develop in you through what you're currently doing?
