Back to EpisodesCoby Bryant Injury Changes EVERYTHING For Bears Secondary | Luther Burden Taking WR1
Description
The Chicago Bears’ first padded training-camp practice delivered major performances, growing position battles and a devastating setback for the secondary.
On today’s episode of Chicago Bears Central, Haize reacts to the latest update on safety Coby Bryant, who is expected to miss approximately eight to ten weeks after suffering a left-leg injury during one-on-one drills. Bryant was visibly emotional before leaving practice on a cart, and his absence could extend into the regular season.
The injury places even more pressure on a secondary already missing Kyler Gordon and Elijah Hicks, while Terell Smith also exited Monday’s practice. Cam Lewis moved into the starting safety role alongside rookie Dillon Thieneman, with Jaylon Jones returning to the first-team nickel position.
There was encouraging news elsewhere, as Kyle Monangai returned in full pads after missing three practices with a soft-tissue injury. Chicago’s expected RB2 appears to be ramping back toward full strength.
🔥 The biggest offensive storyline continues to be Luther Burden III. After making several difficult catches down the sideline, Burden was described as the early frontrunner to become Chicago’s WR1. With DJ Moore gone and Rome Odunze expected to inherit a larger role, the competition for Caleb Williams’ primary target may be much closer than anticipated.
Haize also breaks down:
🏈 Braxton Jones receiving the first padded reps with the starters
💪 Jedrick Wills producing a strong day during one-on-ones
🚀 Jahdae Walker continuing his impressive training camp
⚡ Zavion Thomas proving he may be more than a gadget weapon
👀 Sam Roush earning a larger role in the passing game
🛡️ Ryan Poles closely evaluating Chicago’s defensive line
Wills impressed with his technique and hands, Walker generated multiple contested and downfield catches, and Thomas used his speed to create another explosive touchdown during one-on-one work.
Ben Johnson also praised Burden’s motivation, expanding route tree, inside-outside versatility, deep-ball ability and willingness to contribute as a blocker—further confirming that the breakout hype is legitimate.
