In July 1987, 16-year-old Theresa Ann Bier was camping in Yosemite National Park — but not with family. She had been traveling with an older man she recently met, a relationship that alarmed those who knew her. Shortly after arriving at the campground, Theresa disappeared. The man claimed she had wandered off, but investigators found holes in his account early on. With nobody recovered despite exhaustive searches of Yosemite's vast wilderness, a conviction proved impossible. Authorities have long suspected homicide. Some of America's most beautiful places can become the setting for its darkest crimes.
