The Belgian Detective and his loyal companion Arthur come at the request of Sir Claud Wychbury, whose estate borders the trees and whose letter arrived three days before the discovery: "I require your discretion more than your celebrated intelligence." Then boys climbing an old hollow elm put a hand inside the trunk, and bring out a skull. No one knows who she was. But within days a question appears in chalk on a wall near Birmingham, in large uneven letters — WHO PUT BELLA IN THE WYCH ELM? — and whoever wrote it knows the dead woman's name, which is more than the police do. Between a household that hears three slow knocks from the wood at night, a housekeeper who insists that a boy called William died among those trees twenty-one years ago, a smear of chalk reading WILLIAM KNOWS, a strand of red wool tied to a carved ornament left beneath the drawing-room window, and a hidden door in the wallpaper, the Belgian Detective must work out who wants the tree to keep its secret — and who wants it told.
