Why Jesus Made a SAMARITAN the Hero (Not the Priest) β Best Of Devotionals w/ Pastor Mike Woodruff
Description
Why did Jesus make the Samaritan the hero of his most famous parable β and not the priest, and not the Levite? In Part 2 of this "Best Of" devotional, Pastor Mike Woodruff walks through the story itself in Luke 10:30β33 and unpacks a detail most people completely miss.
Yesterday, a religious leader tried to sidestep Jesus with a loaded question: "Who is my neighbor?" Today, Jesus answers with the parable itself β a man beaten and left for dead on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho, ignored by a priest, ignored by a Levite, and finally helped by a Samaritan. Mike explains why that last detail would have stunned Jesus' original audience, and why the choice of hero was Jesus deliberately confronting the ethnic tension and prejudice of his day.

- Why the priest and the Levite walked past a half-dead, unclothed man without helping
- The real first-century tension between Jews and Samaritans, and why it mattered who Jesus picked as the hero
- Why choosing a Samaritan was a deliberately disruptive move, not a random detail
- How this sets up the answer to "who is my neighbor?" (coming in Part 3)

Frequently asked:
Why did Jesus choose a Samaritan as the hero of the parable? Samaritans and Jews had deep ethnic and religious tension in the first century β Samaritans were widely looked down on. By making a Samaritan the one who stops to help, Jesus deliberately challenged the prejudice of his audience and redefined who counts as a "neighbor."
Why did the priest and the Levite pass by the injured man? The text doesn't give an explicit reason, but Mike explains the social and religious context β an unclothed, unconscious stranger gave them no way to identify him, and stopping carried real social risk in that stratified society.
Where is this story found in the Bible? Luke 10:25β37; this devotional covers verses 30β33.
