Rigid, rule-following AI in KYC gets the middle-ground judgment calls wrong. Flexible, context-weighing AI gets them more right but loses the audit trail. Two separate studies confirm this is structural, not a model quality problem, because risk-based KYC was written for human judgment in the first place. The fix: keep AI on deterministic checks only, and route anything requiring judgment to a human reviewer.
