The Necessity of Resistance

The Necessity of Resistance

Season 1 Episode 52 Published 4 weeks ago
Description

The most important word in fitness is not motivation, discipline, or even consistency. It is resistance. And the uncomfortable truth at the heart of this episode is that you do not get stronger despite the hard thing. You get stronger because of it.

Liam makes the case that comfort is not a place you arrive at, it is a drift, something that happens to you quietly while you are not paying attention, and that the only way to interrupt it is to choose, on purpose, to walk back into something hard. He proves it with the physiology (why your body only improves when the demand is greater than it is used to, and why the discomfort is the signal for growth rather than a warning) and then shows the same law running through everything: his own training, where he rejoins CrossFit whenever he has gone soft; his business, where the hardest stretches made him a better owner; and a group of members who came back changed after choosing to compete in Belfast.

There is an honest caveat too, the one the tough-guy fitness crowd always misses: resistance without recovery is not growth, it is just damage. The strain is the stimulus. The rest is where the reward is banked.

If you have gone comfortable and you know it, this is the nudge to walk back into something hard on purpose.
