כיצד יתכן שלאחרי גודל העילוי של ט"ו באב שבו "קיימא סיהרא באשלמותא" – יתחיל מצב דחסרון הלבנה, הלוך וחסור?! אלא שבאמת זהו"ע דהלוך ומוסיף בענין הביטול, עד לתכלית הביטול ברגע שלפני המולד ("ונפקדת"), כהכנה למולד וחידוש הלבנה ("כי יפקד מושבך"); יש נוהגין לברך איש את חבירו בברכת כתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה החל מט"ו באב ואילך. הרי שמלבד אזהרה הברורה ד"ואברכך מברכיך" בכלל – ישנה הדגשה יתירה בזה בימים אלו בסמיכות לחודש אלול. ומה שבחודש אלול יש צורך לדבר עם יהודים דברי התעוררות לתשובה – הרי זה יכול וצריך להיות בדרך התורה ש"דרכיך דרכי נועם וגו'" – לדבר ענינים של טוב וברכה וכו', שעי"ז פועלים יותר; כ' באב הוא א' הימים שהביאו "קרבן העצים", שנדבו עצים לביהמ"ק והיו מניחים ב"לשכת העצים" שממנו היו לוקחים העצים למי שלא הי' לו משלו, דבזה מודגש הענין דאהבת ישראל.

Seemingly, after the tremendous ascent of the 15th of Av (when “The moon is in its full state”), it is impossible for the moon to wane again. But the waning in fact represents an increase in bittul, culminating in the ultimate bittul just before the new moon (“venifkadta”), which is followed by the moon’s rebirth and renewal (“ki yipaked moshavecha”). There is a custom to begin wishing one another to be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year beginning on the 15th of Av. Meaning, aside from the fact that “I will bless those who bless you” in general, there is a special emphasis in this regard during this time of year. When speaking to other Jews during the month of Elul about teshuvah, it must be done in way of Torah, “whose ways are pleasant ways” – one must speak of positive things and of blessing etc., and one accomplishes more this way. 20 Av is one of the days on which the Wood Offering was brought in the Beis Hamikdash. The wood was placed in the Wood Chamber to be used by those who did not have wood of their own – an expression of Ahavas Yisroel.
