A meditation for the Feast of Saint Peter’s Chains, from Dom Guéranger’s “The Liturgical Year”, Volume IV of the Time after Pentecost.The Feast of Saint Peter's Chains, celebrated on August 1 in the traditional Roman calendar, commemorates the miraculous deliverance of St. Peter from imprisonment in Jerusalem, when an angel of the Lord freed him from the chains with which King Herod Agrippa had bound him (Acts 12:1-11). From ancient times, the chains themselves were venerated as precious relics, and according to tradition, when the chains from Peter's imprisonment in Jerusalem were placed alongside those from his later imprisonment in Rome, they miraculously fused into a single chain. The feast reminds the faithful that no earthly power can restrain the Church when God wills her freedom, and that Christ remains faithful to His promise that the gates of hell shall not prevail against the Rock upon whom He built His Church. Born in Sablé-sur-Sarthe, he entered the priesthood in 1827 and, inspired by a vision to restore monastic life, reestablished the Benedictine community at Solesmes in 1833, becoming its first abbot.
