Deep in the mountains of Tigray, Ethiopia, lies a monastery that guards one of the world's oldest illuminated Christian manuscripts: the Garima Gospels. These two volumes, written in Ge'ez on goat skin, have been dated by radiocarbon to between 530 and 660 CE, placing them among the earliest surviving illustrated Gospels anywhere, possibly predating the Book of Kells. Legend says they were created by Abba Garima, one of the Nine Saints who brought monasticism to Ethiopia from the Byzantine Empire. The illuminations blend Byzantine, Syriac, and indigenous Ethiopian styles in vivid colors that still astonish. How did these fragile treasures survive centuries of war, including the jihad of Ahmad Gragn? Why were they nearly unknown to the west until recently?
