England, the summer of 1934, and the whole country has discovered a subject it knows nothing whatever about and discusses with enormous enthusiasm: women's boxing. Gloria "The Knockout" Moretti and Ruthless Ruth Rowan trade insults for the newsreel cameras, the boxing authorities refuse to recognise the contest, the borough has threatened to ban it, and every attempt to suppress the bout has sold another row of seats. Then Gloria leaves a nightclub shortly after midnight and is attacked in the street. Three days later, poison arrives at her mother's house, folded into a spring-loaded parcel designed to fly open in her hands. The police shrug and call the whole thing publicity — a stunt by a young woman who has learned exactly how much fame is worth. So her brother Tony brings the family to the Belgian Detective and his loyal companion Arthur instead. Moving from the Blue Lantern to a house beyond a double row of elms, through six suspects, one coward, and a gentleman who wears heavy gloves indoors, the detective must decide which illusion requires the most fear — and find the man outside the ring who profits when the knockout finally falls. The Knockout Who Would Not Fall is an original Golden Age-style mystery about spectacle, money, and a woman the world would rather see beaten than believed.
